why 1.8V ?
Which source give it out ?
Since many micros can work at 3V (2 AA cells or 1 lithium cell).
E.g. the ACE1202L (Fairchild) can work at 2.0 - 5.5V.

There are also some step up converters to work from a single cell (down to 0.9V), e.g. Maxim.
