i have used all the ports at this stage it seems, the nearest i got to some display reading was some mumbo jumbo characters.
If the "mumbo jumbo characters" changed when you wrote to the display that would indicate a strong possibility that you had the control signals right and the problem was data (lines) or timing of the signals.
