Q. What chipset does it use? It might use the standard Hitachi commands in 4-line mode to communicate?

A. It does use a HDD44780. I later found this out by scratching some glue off of the top of the chip put there to discourage reuse of this module.

I also upon closer inspection found 4 more pins under a connector which makes this a garden Varity LCD 16 x 2.
