I did communication between PC/LPT and custom board contains 52 using ECP+EPP mode. But we used Altera PLD because time of RD/WR cycles of parallel port are defined with processor (x86) speed due it executes IN/OUT commands. As result there is very small wait state (5..15us) to "catch" value from the bus otherwise hardware controller of PC detects timeout and does finish operation with IO error flag.

I may provide you some more details, but as for me: it is not good idea to connect 8052 (at least slow devices) to LPT without additional hardware (using /INTx only).
