Once you "know" that all the positions actually work you can figure out the corresponding DDRAM address that is needed to place a symbol at any particular screen position. (Hint: Use the displayed character pattern and subtract the initial character value from it).

I think Erik mentioned it but you may want to try to set the 2-line mode bit to each of 0 and 1 to evaluate which mode works for your display. Not all 2-line displays actually operate as 2 line devices.
