you haven't mentioned which type of remote control do you need.

Do you want to maintain line of sight, here an IR would be suitable.

but if are located behind a wall then RF would be suitable.

For smaller distance, try to use a Used car security remote control thing, one which has a transmitter hanging in the keychain. Good anough for distances around 50/60 feet without line of sight.
