You will need some kind of device addressing deal to be able to know which reader the PC is working with - 8 devices = 3 bits. In theory (correct me if I'm wrong, you lot!), you should be able to power several smart card readers via an extra pair of wires in the data cable (I've done that for 1 mag card reader, 50 meters from the host device). A lot depends on the numbers & distances involved, which we (you?) don't know yet.
