The distinction between serial and parallel data doesn't really apply in this case.The crc routine still works in the same way and gives the same result.There are lots of more robust methods for checking for and even correcting errors in memory based on Huffman coding or even more exotic techniques but unless you have some reason to expect your memory will be corrupted on a regular basis such as in a high radiation enviroment or you are using a huge amount of memory I really would not bother.
