When you use binary input, the number can't be displayed as ASCII text. If the number is larger than 7F hex then it is not a displayable character. My suggestion would be to have the microprocessor do the work for you. Read the dipswitch and then convert the hex value to two ASCII bytes. Which can easily be read as text and printed out. This may not be an efficient use of the comm port, but it makes it easier to debug when you have a problem.
