have a look at Kelvin Smiths work! He interfaces 8052 microcontrollers to the ethernet, using cheap NE2000 Ethernet network cards. TCP/IP is available too, so you can easily communicate with your PC - and all other PCs connected to the internet all around the world, free of charge!
