I think we are in the same boat !
i do a lot of searching till a year ago and found the chip and found some link and a developed player link in japanese (maybe chinese) .
and some other links , sorry i don't remember the links but i'll take a look and let you know.

something serius stoped me to follow the hardware mp3 decoding process , that was the software mp3 or any other codec decoding , this technic is being used in many of thing we today use , cell phones , mp3 players ,Pagers and more , so i founded ARM u processors are widely used in protable devices.
one of its benefits in software mp3 decoding is you can find example codes and routines free and ready to use .
