I think you rather miss the point, Mike is illustrating the general case of using FSM to synthesise a solution to a problem. He took a simple case and analysed it completely using statemachines. That is not to say that FSM is the simplest way to solve the stated problem, just that this general example solves the problem and can be readily scaled.
