Over here in the Colonies, binning is the process of grouping manufactured parts based on their measured performance with respect to a parameter of interest, typically by standard deviation from nominal. Thus, a given manufacturer might sell their nominal parts to Allied or Newark at the normal retail price, while selling the +3 sigma bin parts to the military at a premium and the -3 sigma bin parts to Radio Shack at a discount. |
