For higher voltage applications where you want to get a bunch of light out of an LED it may be appropriate to look at a type of component called an "incandescent replacement lamp". These are designed for use in circuits where direct connection across a higher voltage is the normal way to use the part. They are very efficient becasue they contain multi-LED arrays. Typical applicable voltages that are available are 12, 24 and 28 volts.
