Try setting the P1 with the data value before the E pulse. Also make sure you have the RS line level set properly for the DATA mode as opposed to CONTROL mode. Finally yoy have now shown support for the RW line. In the case of send characters to the LCD controller you need to have this line in the WRITE level which is a 0 for most hookups.
