You are very right Steve. While we take solace in the saying "Variety is the spice of life" many Indians like me, long for a single national language. Of course, going by the simple majority, one can say that Hindi and its various state based flavours comes close to that status. I wonder if any other country in the world has this dubious "uniqueness" - I am not referring to the various dialects of a single language but various languages themsleves like we have it here !
