#76958 - What does DS actually do?
Please read the question first before you jump on me!

I know that DS reserves space in the currently selected segment in byte units. I also know by looking at the debugger in my emulator that it doesn't initialise the reserved space in any way.

Does this mean that all DS does is advance the location counter of the relevant segment so that this space is not used?

Your help is (as ever) appreciated. I'm struggling to understand how to use DS, as even when I reserve space say in DSEG, ASM51 is quite happy to let me use the data directive (for example) to assign a symbol to one of the addresses I thought I'd reserved. I was expecting some kind of warning?
