Haven't read all replies, but code to drive a LCD in 4-bit-mode with a 8051 can be found on my homepage at

The code has lots of remarks so you can follow exact what is going on (delaytimes etc.). You have to replace the I2c-commando that is driving the PCF8574 and put the code directly on you PORT.
