just a suggestion - use a 8051 derivative with CAN interface. For example, AT89C51CC03, T89C51CC02, C8051F040/060 etc. CAN interface offers you Time Triggered Communication - read http://www.8052.com/forum/read.phtml?id=65689 As well, CAN supports network priority very well - there is no network lag at collision detections.
