Note that this document is over 10 years old. Of course, all the principles will still apply, but lots of things have moved on on; eg, higher clock frequencies, denser PCBs, lower signal voltages,...
And Regulatory requirements are tighter today. All of which probably means you need to be even more careful today. It also has an interesting bit about "Recovering Gracefully from a Software Upset" on pp15-17. This briefly discusses Watchdogs & some other techniques for recovering from software glitches.
