That's pure vanilla, plain, bog-standard 'C' - nothing specifically to do with the 8051 at all. Details can be found in any 'C' programming book.
Of course, your particular 'C' compiler's Manual will give specific details of the implementation - including any constraints, limitations, etc.

VB has some very powerful functions for converting data types and strings.

He could be using assembly for 8051 instead of C hence I was stating the assumption on which my suggestion was based. Since I use C on PCs and embedded systems, I am aware nearly all C compilers have printf and such other ANSI C stuff. Just for record, some demos C do not allow certain functions with float. Even if you do not wish to help, there is no need to fly off the handle. I am sure my English was pure vanilla plain ... .
