The character D is used to signify a seperator, but I have seen cards with charachers A-F as data as well, such as the one I use to get into the place I work at.

It's very easy to read a swipe card, I just built a track 2 reader with a lcd 20x4 display to show the data that was on the card, very handy in my line of work.
