Yes you can talk to the 8051 using the RxD and TxD via USB and the PC.

Have a look at www.ftdi.co.uk they do just the device you need FT82U232AM.

I've just been using the U245 version (patallel bus I/F and it seems ok). They also give you the PC USB drivers .
