You clearly have something wrong with your hardware. Maybe a wiring error, counting pins in wrong order, or lack of full knowledge of how a certain part functions.

I would also like to recommend that you re-consider how you intend to operate the NPN transistor. The connection you describe is a common emitter hookup and is not an ideal method for use with a microcontroller output. I think you would be much better off with something like this:
