There is no need for the frequency if i am sampling for a long enough time. The method that i followed is just as you wrote here. Actually, this problem(finding RMS of sinusoidal signal) was a part of a programming competition in my college and we were given the frequency and the type of signal(i.e. sinusoidal). Frequency doesn't matter actually.
