3) Use some USB-232 converter chip in your design. I rememebr one such chip is from FTDI, very simple to interface

Option 3 allows you to connect direct to the 8051's UART pins - so you don't need an RS232 converter; just USB-to-async.

The 4th option is to use a USB-to-parallel converter, and make a parallel interface to the 8051.
Again, FTDI (among others) make such chips.
