For such purpose I use terminal by Bray.
Btw. the common error is leaving handshake on (while not implementing it).
It could also help trying to echo back the received characters. Also, an oscilloscope is an invaluable tool when working with mcu's - try to get one.
Your asm51 coding style could be improved, but the code snippet you presented seems to be correct.
