To choose a programmer you have to look for 3 things:
1) the device list
2) the response to new derivatives
3) the length after the purchase that new devices will be supported for that model.

I'm using a PG302 programmer to load hex files into my AT8051 uP. .... Should I get a better programmer, assembler........?.
If you are "using" the programmer, why do you wonder about getting another?
For those that use assembler only, I recommend the free metalink, of the free full assemblers it has one major advantage: it is fully documented.
