The thing is, a solenoid looks like close to a dead short for the fraction of a second it takes before the iron core completes the magnetic circuit properly - and since its a mechanical movement that causes the impedance change, it takes longer than you expect. Look VERY carefully at Ipk non-repetitive rating of the devices you choose.
