#139747 - use for what Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Most of the time I use the scope only as a comfortable and very expensive voltmeter. OK, this is exagerration, but to see a I2C stream, or just for basic '51 circuit troubleshooting ("reset pulsed then stays low") even that $1000 scope is often more than enough, and that makes >90% of the use of any scope.
This is very similar to the "emulator" story. You can most of the time get by without any, but having a simple one (based on the on-chip debug facilities, a.k.a. "JTAG" thingy) can skyrocket your productivity; while having that $$$$$$ "real" emulator really helps you maybe once in a year... OTOH, I almost threw out of the window an el cheapo analog school scope when I was not able to figure out how to set the trigger point - it had a considerable "hysteresis" on the knob setting the trigger level. What I want to say with this is, that even with good "hardware" you can have an unusable or barely usable tool if the controls are thought out bad. In these PC-based scopes the software is often where they fall over... It's too easy to say that such SW is easy... :-( JW |
