the resistors are needed to reduce the noise
I have never had noise problems with on board switches using only the internal pullups, but usually "select - no delay - read" does not work (and if it does, it should still be considered risky) however, "select - delay - read" works (I have often used that for "configuration switches" read to RAM at statup).
