Now, if you add a MAC unit, you'd get closer to a "real" DSP, but the '51 architecture still has severe limitations (memory, etc) that a true DSP wouldn't have. Actually there are already several 8051's with an integrated MAC. The problem is getting the data in and out of it fast enough, I guess. |
