If the unit identifies itself with a serial number, you may move the adapter between the USB interfaces while keeping the same device name.
If the unit doesn't identify itself with a serial number, then Windows will use one device name for each USB port that you connect a chip with that same vendor/device IDs. So a chip that has a nice EEPROM for storing venddir + device + serial number is more likelly to behave well, than a chip that requires an external EEPROM to be added. Anyone selling a USB-to-serial adapter without a serial number should be banned. This world should have a site with blacklists - not only of the manufacturer, but of the distributors who push the crap. It's totally unacceptable to distribute such crap. |
