I'd make a torque sensor in the front sprocket - the losses to the chain drive I'd consider negligible or tare-able.

Yeah, at the start of this thread, a strain gage on the crank was mentioned, and I have been trying to figure out how that would work. This is probably why I'm an EE and not an ME.
