| Guard tones allow v22, v22bis to work on some of the European networks.  For the most part, these tones are not needed anymore. I believe the guard tone was used as a billing mechanism.  I believe the guard tone would be issued by the answering device until a connection was made, then billing would occur.  Calling tones control echo cancellers. |
