also any info you guys have about "chips that you program straight from the PC" i would be so greatful
SILabs (JTAG via EC2) - Philips P89V51... P89C66x programmed via the UART with FlashMagic (free from http://www.esacademy.com) or Atmel (several variants) porogrammed via the UART using Flip (free from http://www.atmel.com) Atmel also have some derivatives that program via an "ISP cable. There are/may be more, but the above should tell you all you need.

I suggest you go about it this way
1) have a look a FlashMagic http://www.esacademy.com
2) have a look at ISP in the datasheet for the P89V51RD2 http://semiconductors.philips.com
3) explore other options
