There are variant 8052 with LCD controllers too, or you can add your own, Philips and ST do them for a start. Doing the whole thing yourself is pretty silly, if a chip can do it for you. Also consider one of the Nokia phone displays - they have silicon on them already, might be a bit too small for you though.
