If you can locate any old US Robotics modems of the 2400 or 9600 baud variety (for, like, $1) you can open them up and find an 8051 dev board complete with RS-232 port, EPROM, SRAM, 5v dc adapter...

Recently I've been collecting vintage music synthesis devices (both pre- and post- MIDI) with know 8051 family CPUs. For instance Roland and Alesis units.
