For programming through their own serial ports the Philps 89C51 RXD series are very very good, but for a one off project I recommend the DS2250 module from Dallas- needs a crystal and a serial port chip like Andy suggested, and gives you 32K of Ram and ROM combined -useful for a simple project. These parts only have TWO timers not the 8052's three.
