PIC put out a lot of free and low cost tools in the past it worked for them. ASM C and basic see how many people swear by the basic stamp.

The PIC has its place the market says so.
Atemel is tring the same thing with the AVR.

Come back in 20 more years, and see what the market says.

PS: Erik someone in the embedded fourm wants to use a SiLabs chip to make a super Basic stamp. 100 mips.
