Although individual pins may be capable of 20mA, there is often also a per-port and a total-package limit as well.

I think it was an LPC that I looked at a while ago: its per-pin ratings met my requirements, but not the per-port and/or total-package.

This does, of course, depend on the precise devices actually being used - there is no escaping having to read the datasheets!!
