Is about as valuable information as what you state in your post re solving your problem. that is concluded fromt he port pin status and ale signal) communication part doesn't work. indicates you have a scope, what happens on Rxd and Txd? what does ALE etc matter if you do not check those? best guess: the MAX232 a connection to power when you changed from switcher to linear.
