are about the crappiest pieces of paper ever produced.

The most accurate reference to "standard" (I forget the chip name) are found at Noritake (yes, it is a VFD, but the chips are the same) and Optrex.

I have, in the past, had more problems with using datasheets in chinglish and whatever than with the actual LCDs themselves.

What does the data sheet say? Post a link to it.
