another option can be "W3150A (TCP/IP hardwired chip)".it has both parallel and i2c interfaces .this can achive 1 mbps data rate on 8051,8 mbps on avr and 20 mbps on arm 7.even low end 8 bit microcontrollers are very much sutable as there is no software over head required.there is one readymade module integrating this chip+ PHY chip, Transformer, and RJ45 available from www.mcselec.com......search for part number"IIM7010A"on above mentioned site.
