Hi! The control commands and character codes (to display) you have to send to the 2 diffrent registers. Register is depending on R/W and Enable signal combination. Are you sure that it is ok?

Are you sure, your lcd is receiving commands properly? Maybe some bits of data line are shorted or disconected. Try to change the cursor's location. If you display really receives commands, it should work.
