We have seen the Txd and Rxd pins on the uC directly connected to the RS232 line, 5V transcievers used in 3V3 circuite, homebrew "you do not need the MAX232(equivalent) 'tested' 'solutins' " and more in this area. another aspect is the most? cellphones work on non-standard signal levels and (for PC connect) require an adapter.
