#125849 - Mains Isolation
Responding to: ???'s previous message

Hello,
I have project PF corrector. In which I am taking current wave form from CURRENT TRANSFORMER and for voltage wave form I am thinking taking by connecting 1M resistor in series. Can any one suggest me better and safe methode for taking voltage wave form. Here mains is 230V, 50Hz.

Bye

Arif,
I assume you want to connect the 1M resistor in series with the mains active. It is not 1 resistor you need but 2 resistors to form a voltage divider. This will reduce the voltage signal to a usable level and knowing the ratio of the resistive divider will also allow you to 'measure' the AC mains voltage safely.
I feel that a better solution is to use an isolating transformer to get your voltage signal. A 240V/12V A.C. plug pack is a quick fix. This will give isolation from the mains and a safer working environment.
If you do not use an isolating transformer, then your AC reference is the Neutral, and connecting this to any earthed point will trip any RCD device, (earth leakage breaker), protecting that circuit.

Cheers,
Tony
