Simply, because you mentioned something that does not exist, namely the "internal crystal oscillator". Look what you wrote:

There's no "internal crystal oscillator". This would imply that the crystal is inside the chip, which is not.

What you have with the Silabs' micro is an "internal oscillator" (which has nothing to do with crystals at all) and a built-in oscillator circuitry, which in combination with an external crystal forms a crystal oscillator (Pierce oscillator). But when you talk about the "internal crystal oscillator", especially if you plan to leave the XTAL pins unconnected, this makes no sense at all.
