Yes, you are right, it IS confusing: In the Silabs' datasheet the standard built-in oscillator circuitry to form this well known "Pierce oscillator", means this simple oscillator inverter, is called "external oscillator drive circuit", which does not properly explain what's going on here: What we connect externally is the crystal, but the active driving circuit is built-in. Both together form the oscillator, so, one part is internal the other external. Better would have been: "External crystal drive circuit" or "external resonator drive circuit". Kai |
