On every post re home made SMPSes I will, invariably, reply "it is not worth the trouble to save two bucks for a one off by making your own SMPS". Also, if you use a homemade SMPS in a commercial product and you are not an expert in making such the 'savings' will be eaten 44 times over in service costs.

for a tyoical uC product you can buy a Phihong power supply for ALL your meeds (be it just 5 or 5, +12, -12) of it for 5-25 bucks (check Mouser) and show me how you can save money making your own.

Not to mention that if you look in the box we all have marked "Wall-Warts" there will, most likely be what you need.
